Application for Adoption/Placement Florida Parrot Rescue. A nonprofit organization 7701 Delta Queen Lane • Phone: 813-516-1759 *Business Contact Hours 8AM - 8PM Only E-mail: flparrotrescue@aol.com Website: www.floridaparrotrescue.com
Adoption into qualified, non-breeding homes is the preferred option for most parrots and other captive birds. Caring for an exotic captive bird requires a serious commitment — especially if the bird is older and has suffered from neglect, abuse, or ignorance on the part of its former human companion.
What Animals Are Available for Adoption/Placement Through FPR?
While we have far more animals than qualified adoptive homes, we are very protective of the individuals we have come to know and care for. We carefully screen prospective adopters with home visits and interviews, assessing their ability to provide patience, quality care, stability, and love. A Potential Adopter’s preference for a specific species/breed of bird is respected, but it does not determine which bird will be placed with the Potential Adopter. An animal is placed in a home that can provide for the animal’s best mental, emotional, psychological, and financial interests.
How Do I Adopt from FPR? – The Adoption/Placement Process
In order to insure that an animal is placed in the environment best suited to meet his/her needs, all applicants must successfully complete the Adoption/Placement Process. All placements will be made in the best interest of the animal. The Adoption/Placement Process may require, but is not limited to:
1. A thoroughly completed Adoption/Placement Application. Original signatures are REQUIRED.
2. A phone or personal interview with a FPR board member.
3. Two (2) references from people who have known you for 5 years or more.
4. One (1) reference from your regular veterinarian. (If you do not have a vet we ask that you contact FPR for assistance with this step.)
5. An initial home visit from an FPR representative.
6. The Potential Adopter(s) must provide an enlarged copy of his/her (or their) current and valid Driver’s License(s).
7. Subsequent scheduled home visits from an FPR representative.
8. Written agreement to all terms of the Adoption/Placement Contract.
The FPR Board of Directors, or its appointee(s) and/or the Adoption/Placement Committee thoroughly consider all Adoption/Placement applications.
Adoption/Placements are approved or denied based on the submitted Adoption/Placement Applications, interviews, home visits, references, recommendations of the Adoption/Placement Committee and/or FPR representative, and, when necessary, a majority vote of the FPR Board of Directors. In addition, some applicants may be required to adhere to additional Adoption/Placement Process requirements before the Adoption/Placement of an individual animal is approved.
Individuals who are approved for Adoption/placement are required to obtain an FPR-approved cage, toys and food for the animal to be adopted, participate in FPR educational classes, demonstrate a clear understanding of the individual animal’s needs, agree to follow-up phone calls and visits from a FPR Volunteer, and sign a legally binding Adoption/Placement Contract. FPR directors, volunteers, family, friends, and associates must meet the same stringent criteria to become an approved FPR adoption/placement home.
The Potential Adopter must have made arrangements to purchase an FPR-approved cage such that when asked, the Potential Adopter can supply the manufacturer, style/model number, and purchase price of the cage.
FPR Volunteers work closely with adopters throughout the Adoption/Placement Process and after the animal has been placed in his/her new home to insure a successful adjustment and the continued well-being of the adopted/placed animal.
Many applications are denied because of failure to meet FPR requirements for adoptive homes. Applicants who are denied as an FPR adoption/placement home are contacted, in writing, by e-mail, or through a personal phone call from a FPR Director or the Adoption/Placement Committee Director. An applicant previously approved as an FPR adoption/Placement home may or may not be approved to adopt a specific individual bird or multiple birds from FPR.
Note: Due to favorable publicity, media coverage, and enthusiastic friends and other bird lovers, FPR receives many applications. There is a growing list of applicants and it may be 2–4 weeks before our volunteers are able to schedule interviews and home visits. Please be patient…animals are worth the wait!
What Are FPR Adoption/Placement Restrictions?
If a Potential Adopter lives more than 200 miles from Florida, it may be difficult to fulfill all the steps required in FPR Adoption/Placement process.
It is the policy of FPR to adopt/place animals only with adults over 18 years of age — minors may not apply to adopt a bird. However, applications submitted by a parent or guardian of a minor will be considered, providing that the parent or guardian agrees to all terms in the Adoption/Placement Contract.
WE DO NOT SHIP ANIMALS, all potential adopters will be required to secure transport.
How Much Does FPR Charge for Adoption/Placement Fees?
FPR does not profit from the adoption/placements fees. The adoption/placement fees are a reflection of the average cost of care provided for that bird species/breed. However, in order to maintain our programs and our high standard of animal care, we must charge reasonable adoption/placement fees. Many animals will need our care indefinitely — some for the rest of their lives. Every dollar that FPR brings in is used to promote our mission and provide for birds in need.
The adoption/placement fees are due IN FULL at the time of adoption/placement (when contract is signed by adopter). No exceptions. The veterinary expenses incurred vary based on the individual animal's needs and is considered when adoption/placement fees are set. A copy of all available veterinary records will be made accessible to the adopter.
Adoption/Placement General Information
An individual who wishes to adopt an animal is a potential adopter (Potential Adopter) and must be in good standing with FPR. .
Upon completion of the Adoption Application, and as soon as can be scheduled, FPR representatives will perform a home visit. The home visit is to ensure that a/the animal to be adopted/placed is being placed within the appropriate environment. FPR uncompromisingly requires the animal be placed in a home/environment that is in his/her best interests physically, mentally, emotionally, and psychologically. Subsequent home visits may be required following placement of the animal .
FPR requires the Potential Adopter be financially capable of appropriately caring for a/the animal. If necessary, the Potential Adopter may be required to show proof of financial responsibility.
The Potential Adopter will pay the prescheduled Placement Fee along with any outstanding avian veterinarian fees directly associated with the animal’s care and treatment.
The Potential Adopter must read and understand the Adoption/Placement Contract. The Potential Adopter must sign the legal and binding Placement Contract.
Failure of the Potential Adopter to successfully and appropriate comply with any of the above, or other criteria as FPR may deem appropriate, will preclude the Potential Adopter from being approved to receive any animal in FPR program.
After reviewing the above, along with previewing any of the forms and contracts, it is easy to think, “This is a long and ridiculous process!” The answer to this thought is, “Yes, and it is intended to be thorough and scrupulous.” No apologies are made. All animals, are sensitive, intelligent and emotional beings deserving of our respect. Each animal deserves a life complete with gentle and loving social interaction; this includes physical, mental, emotional, and psychological wellbeing.
Frankly, FPR is NOT a pet store, it is not a pet breeder, and its mission is not to conduct or condone a “give away” or “free animal” program.
All Placement Fees and recouped expenses ensure the continuation of FPR nonprofit efforts of avian education, intervention, rescue, and placement.
Education is a fundamental focus of FPR. Regardless of how much any person knows about animal care, nutrition, behavior, training, safety, first-aid, psychology, etc. ongoing avian research through the world results in every-changing theories, procedures, treatments, and products. It is with this in mind, and the fact that caring Members and donors trust in FPR’S integrity and credibility, that our Potential Adopters are provided a method of sharing information through interactive and educational events. These are also the reasons why FPR scrupulously and uncompromisingly applies its policies and procedures.
Bird care is a SERIOUS RESPONSIBILITY. FPR’S policy is to insure that each person adopting an animal can provide suitable and appropriate housing, is morally and financially capable of providing for the animal, and is educated in proper care and nutrition for the animal. A Potential Adopter must be at least 18 years of age to adopt an animal from FPR. This application is designed to provide FPR with necessary information to consider an adoption placement. Please answer all questions and return to the above address. If any questions are left unanswered, an application will not be considered.
